TAE- KWON - DO Is a Korean martial art which was formerly known as TAE-KYON over 1300 years ago. TAE- means to kick or smash with the feet. KWON- means to punch or to smash with the hands. DO - is the way of or art of. TAE-KWON-DO also has its roots in the HWARANG-(WA-RANG) or "The flowering manhood". They were an elite fighting corps who protected the tribal groups from war like neighbors. However in 1909 Japanese forces occupied Korea and outlawed practices of traditional Tae-Kwon-Do. The great masters fled all over Korea and Asia picking up and adding to their discipline. After WWII many Koreans returned to their home bringing with them their new refined Tae-Kwon-Dos. in 1954 A master of the old Tae-Kyon was promoted to General. He spread his knowledge of the art. Tae-Kwon-Do became international. It was after the Korean war Tae-Kwon-Do was brought to the U.S. by American servicemen. Eventually American Kang -Duk -Kwan was born.
